Home Based Physio Ardingly

Here at The Well Balanced Centre, we offer home based physiotherapy in Ardingly. Our services are perfect for getting you or a loved one back on their feet after a stay in hospital.

How to recover after a stay in hospital

A stay in hospital, no matter our age, can be traumatic but it is especially difficult if you are elderly. Often, it can take some time to recover from a stay in hospital and get used to being home again.

Interestingly, a Yale study reported that just 52.3% of patients aged 70 and up “regained their pre-ICU level of functioning”. The study also reported that many of these patients left hospital with more health complications than they’d entered with.

After working in the NHS for 16 years, I know this story all too well. Elderly patients can get stuck in a cycle of going in and out of hospital. This is because they become afraid of movement at home, worrying that another accident will occur. In fact, this can make you more accident prone as your joints seize up. Here at The Well Balanced Centre, we want this to change. We are all about getting you mobile and having you re-enter the community after a fall.

Setting goals

One of the best things you can do is to set small goals for yourself. After a distressing time, it is unrealistic to expect that you will be fully back to normal immediately. Try setting yourself small goals to slowly acclimatise yourself to being back home. Something like ‘I want to climb the stairs using a handrail’ is a good, realistic goal to set. As you get stronger and more confident, try setting ‘bigger’ goals. Perhaps walking, assisted, to the end of the garden and back again. Setting small goals means you are easily able to see your progress and gain confidence.

One of the best ways to recover after a fall is to start having home based physiotherapy sessions. Here at The Well Balanced Centre, we provide home based physiotherapy in Ardingly and across West Sussex.
