Home based physiotherapy in Handcross
A hospital stay
A hospital stay, regardless of our age, can be traumatic, but it is particularly difficult for elderly individuals. Often, it takes some time to recover from a hospital stay and become accustomed to being home again.
Having worked in the NHS for 16 years, I am all too familiar with this situation. Elderly patients can find themselves trapped in a cycle of going in and out of the hospital. This is because they develop a fear of movement at home, worrying that another accident may occur. In fact, this fear can increase the likelihood of accidents as their joints become stiff.
Here at The Well Balanced Centre, we are determined to change this. Our focus is on helping you regain mobility and reintegrate into the community after experiencing a fall.
Setting small goals for yourself is one of the most effective things you can do. After going through a distressing time, it is unrealistic to expect an immediate return to normal. Instead, try setting small goals to gradually adapt to being back home. For example, a realistic goal could be "I want to climb the stairs using a handrail." As you become stronger and more confident, you can set larger goals. Perhaps you can aim to walk, with assistance, to the end of the garden and back. Setting small goals allows you to easily track your progress and build confidence.
